Why Now?

Boy they had it so GOOD for so long didn’t they! They collected your advertising dollars in advance and you waited breathlessly, for months, to get the new Yellow Pages directory to see how your ad displayed and what your competitors had done. Then along came the Gold Pages and then the Internet. Now they would like you to advertise on the yellowpages_dotcom!

The question you need to ask here is just how can you effectively communicate on the internet? You will need a solid website presence and you can also consider online advertising to bring initial website exposure. For our clients the website presence always comes from a WordPress website that allows you to control and refresh content.

To put this in terms that their previous customers might find useful is to view internet exposure as being similar to billboard advertising and Yellow Pages ads.

Google AdWords campaigns, and other online ads, are based on the “auctioning” of ad positions based on bids that allow any business to place an ad on the first page of results, for the keywords that they purchase. In a chosen keyword category you can pay more for your ad placement, but your competitors can also increase the price that they are willing to pay. While this strategy can be leveraged to move up to the first page, in the long run you will continue to drive the cost of that placement higher and higher. Because the auction process is ongoing, there is also no guarantee that your placement won’t be bought out at any time.

If Yellow Page ads are compared to Google Adwords, we can see that the placement of the ad is not static but can be very dynamic in terms of content. However, if you are not willing to spend the amount of money required to be at the top of the category, then you need to concentrate on the keyword content. However, content is limited to 2 lines of 26 characters, and can be copied by any competitor at any time. In the Yellow Pages model a business calling itself AA Websites always got the first position for one year, until the next year when a business named AAA Websites got that slot.

Your WordPress website installation can be compared to billboard campaign. If you had a billboard site, then you could continue to occupy that location as long as you wanted. Your WordPress website however has very low fixed costs in comparison to billboards and the content can be refreshed on a timely basis. In addition, that content can be delivered 24 hours a day across many different Social Media platforms and directed to mobile devices. A billboard only delivers content to the cars driving by.

To put it in context, this is the way of the future and the old way of doing things is falling by the wayside.
See the article from the New York Times News Service that quotes Eric Lefkofsky the founder of Groupon.

Using Local Host for WordPress websites

WordPress

This is probably the most fun you can have if you have a need or desire to build websites that are usable on your computer and then be able transfer them to the internet! You will need 3 software programs to make this work.

I recommend Mozilla Firefox because everyone needs a second browser and as you will see when you install Wampserver it works smoothly with it.

Notepad ++. If you are just starting out editing code you will find that this is very easy to use and has some built in features that greatly assist you! Both of these programs are free and part of the open source movement. Next up you will need to download and install Wampserver from Apache. It is available at no charge. Armed with these 3 programs you are ready to take the plunge into using Local Host to build your websites. After the program installs, you will see that there is file directory under Wamp called www and this is where your websites and the necessary files will be installed. You can download a version of WordPress and then copy the content to the websites that you will name here. I am going to use “newdatabase” as my Local Host website name.

After you install Wampserver, you must left click on the tray icon to bring up the following menu. Start the phpMyAdmin. This will bring up the MYSQL page where you can create a new database. Enter the name of the “newdatabase_db” (it is common to add _db to the name you choose) and click on the create button. Now you will choose the Privileges tab and follow these steps to create a new user. It is helpful at this point to have Notepad++ or the text editor that you usually use available.

Open the wp-config-sample file in your text editor and rename it as wp-config.php. In this file enter “newdatabase_db” as the DB NAME and ‘newdatabase” as the user name. In MYSQL enter newdatabase as the User name and select Local in the Host field. Click on Generate Password and copy the information into the wp-config file for PASSWORD. Choose the Check All option in Global privileges and scroll down and click Go.

Using the text editor, locate Authentication Unique Keys and Salts and then do the following.

Scroll down to Line 45 (in Notepad++) and note the fields (8) marked for Authentication Unique Keys and Salt as these need to be replaced. If you are using an older version (pre WordPress 3.0) you will not see fields with SALT in them. Use the same procedure for the (4) lines you need to replace.

Read the text on Line 40 and cut and paste the https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt into your browser. This will generate new codes for the fields. If you are using an older version (pre WordPress 3.0) you will not see fields with SALT in them. Use the same procedure for the 4 lines you need to replace.

Copy and Paste this code over the original files and save all your changes!

Open your browser and type the following command http://localhost/newdatabase.

You should see the Welcome to WORDPRESS screen.

Effective Social Media

Social Networking

WordPress

analyzing website performance

consumer internet behavior patterns

consumers click patterns

Contact Relationship Management technology

contributing content

digital business strategy

e-marketing strategies

Social Media

Social media campaigns

writing blogs

If you you want to succeed in social media marketing, you have to be willing to share your brand experience. . . . → Read More: Effective Social Media

Business owners can use social media most effectively when they are prepared to listen to their customers. If you provide your clients with a means to provide feedback, you must dedicate the time to review the messages you get back. While many companies have the usual lineup of Social Media links, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, others have also added a blog site, using WordPress, as well. These can all be useful tools to communicate with your customers. But don’t view them only as sales tools or you will miss out on their interactive nature and the opportunities that they present. Customers will have opinions that they want to share and you will need to listen carefully or they will move on if they feel ignored. Consumers want to be engaged on many levels. Use social media to express opinions, give tips, product insights and promote upcoming events. Then sit back and listen to your fans.

If you you want to succeed in social media marketing, you have to be willing to share your brand experience. While most companies have been aware of Contact Relationship Management technology, many websites were set up without using Analytics.

The opportunity to capture user data and develop that information should be utilized. Since the entire process is without cost, and tutorials to understand and interpret data are readily available, the cost of implementing this feature affordable. If you do not have an IT specialist on staff, this a task that can easily be handled by the marketing department. If you are just starting a website or considering a blogging site, such as WordPress, this will be one of the first steps in that process.

Small to medium businesses need to take advantage of the many free software programs that exist to improve data gathering and putting that information into context. While large companies are investing significant dollars in their IT departments, the trickle down theory of software and computing power make your entry to this field very affordable.

Simple exercises in Analytics can show where users are logging on from (Geo location), how they are accessing your site (DSL, cable or mobile device), the time spent viewing the site, the pages viewed and what content is attracting the most viewers. This important data is just waiting for you to mine for your use. If it doesn’t work on a face to face basis, how can we use these lessons to assist our efforts in social media and the web?

The number one rule is to have an agenda and stick to it. A dedicated staff member, or virtual assistant, will allow you to capitalize on the opportunities that arise. You need to have goals and measure the results.

Make your website accessible to the public. Website development should be carried out with a view to functionality in the architecture. Do not overload your presence with features designed to sell products and service at the expense of not providing an effective means of communication with your audience. Social networking on the web will allow you increase your exposure and visibility, but make sure you are able to respond with different feeds such as RSS and other blog feeds. If you have a Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter account, be sure to provide links on your homepage. Monitor your email daily if you have provided a comments feature on your blog.

YouTube can help deliver promotional messages, but take care that you are providing relevant content.
